The Director
ROY SURETTE
CENTAUR’S ARTISTIC AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTORA native Vancouverite, Roy studied at Studio 58 where he graduated in 1979. In the early 1980’s he was Associate Artistic Director for Carousel Theatre in Vancouver and Western Canada Theatre Company in Kamloops, B.C. In 1984 he became the Artistic Director of Touchstone Theatre a company acclaimed for innovative and provocative Canadian works. In Vancouver, Roy has directed award-winning productions including Whale Riding Weather, Lion in the Streets, When We were Singing, A Map of The Senses, Lilies and The Number 14, which took Roy to the New Victory Theatre on Broadway, the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto, to Belfast and to Hong Kong. Recently Roy directed Mom’s The Word 2: Unhinged for The Arts Club Theatre in Vancouver and subsequent productions in Glasgow and Melbourne. Other favorite directing projects include Overruled for the Shaw Festival, Shirley Valentine starring Nicola Cavendish for nearly every major theatre across Canada including The Vancouver Playhouse, Manitoba Theatre Centre, Canstage and the Citadel Theatre, and Boy Wonder and The Don Juan Variations for Ballet BC. Roy became The Artistic Director for Victoria’s premiere company, The Belfry Theatre in 1997. For the Belfry, Roy directed over twenty-five plays including acclaimed productions of Stephen Massicotte’s Mary’s Wedding, Unless by Carol Shields and Sara Cassidy and Urinetown: The Musical by Mark Hollman and Greg Kotis. He also directed the premiere English language production of Michel Marc Bouchard’s The Coronation Voyage for Alberta Theatre Projects and the Belfry. His production of Martha played at La Maison Theatre three years ago. He is proud to have directed plays by many of Canada’s leading playwrights and has worked with most major theatre companies across Canada and has won several Jessie Richardson awards in recognition for his diverse body of work, most recently for Unless in 2005 and Kevin Kerr’s aerial comic tragedy Skydive with co-director Stephen Drover in 2007. In June 2007 Roy was appointed as Artistic and Executive Director for Montreal’s esteemed Centaur Theatre where he will direct Maddie Heisler in March. He is thrilled to be welcomed so warmly into the incredible Montreal theatre community.
